summer vacation plans are already taking shape, and I'm in desperate need to motivate winter training, looks like a family get-together in Jacksonville mid-july, any suggestions on velodromes, race series to hit between here and there? Looking at the database, these are in driving distance, or a major detour could be justified if there is good racing and nearby sites for the family to enjoy, comments, suggestions? Definitely will make another stop at the DLV . . . to redeem my performance in last years sprint tourney! Rolling Eyes

The Stone Mountain Olympic velodrome was only available during the 1996 Olympics. It was dismantled afterward.

The stone mountain track was purchased by Disney for planned park that never happened. It was purchased and set up in Bromont Canada where I believe it still is.

If I was going to Jacksonville, I shoot down to Brian Piccolo Velodrome near Fort Lauderdale. Nice Track and great people. Still a bit of a drive but well worth it. DLV of course is another great option.

looks pretty nice . . .

I couldn't find info on a weekly race series.

My wife is a Harry Potter nut so she wants to go to "Harry Potter World" in Orlando, GAAA! So maybe I could negotiate a trip to Cooper City since it's "just a little further" and there's a beach. Compromise. That's what marriage is all about. Rolling Eyes

2 other track options

Baton Rouge, 333m
and the new Velodrome in Rock Hill, South Carolina, 250m

Cooper City is about 4 hours from Orlando, which is about 3 hours from Jacksonville

The Rock Hill, SC track is not built yet, correct? I found this article from Aug of this year using the future tense . . .

http://www.riverwalkcarolinas.com/news/news-herald-columbian-cycling-team-praises.pdf

•Quote• The velodrome will feature a 250-meter track with a maximum of a 40-degree bank. Gita Sporting Goods, a Charlotte-based bicycle distributor, has signed a 10-year, $20,000 sponsorship agreement with the city and plans to donate bicycles to the city for use at the center.

Looks great, if it gets built, I could see a "northern" return loop through Rock Hill, Asheville, and Indy . . . what's going on at the Asheville Melowdrome, isn't that a car track? is there a summer race series?

Rock Hill is over 50% complete and you can see progress on facebook page for project. Sounds like they will have velodrome done late Jan.

Asheville is an old auto race track. Sounds like we will have racing this year but no dates have been set. Turn out has been an issue the last two seasons so hard to find anyone that wants to promote. I am sure something will get posted no later than March.

Unfortunately, someone on the construction crew was killed last weekend in what appears to be a backhoe accident. Not sure what if any, effect this will have on the completion date.

DLV
Cooper City
Rock Hill, SC
Asheville, NC
Indy

only 700 miles extra miles, compared to St Louis - Jacksonville round trip!

Several years ago my son and I did a track vacation that hit six tracks through the south.( in a week) I think it is still on the old Jr. Track Cycling site. He wrote it up for the website, look for "Track Trippin". One track we went to was the old Columbia Speedway. 800m, 12deg bank. If you google it and zoom in you can see the sprinter's line still.
So you could hit 4 or 5 tracks on the way down. Then coming back , if you went west, route 10 would take you to Houston and Alkek, then north to Frisco and the Superdrome.
Sounds like fun
