Another interesting project that we are working on here at Goree MultiSports...

An attempt at the "More than one human" Human Powered World Land Speed Record...

A 3 wheeled Streamliner with 4 stations for people...1 "pilot/engine"...and 3 "engines"...

These will have to be people that make BIG WATTS and are comfortable with extremely small spaces and high speeds... Only the pilot/engine will be able to see out while the vehicle is underway...and only in a very narrow window...plenty for Bonneville though!

Project Goal: 120MPH!

Needs:

1 "Pilot/Engine" max height 5'8
3 "Engines" max height 6'5
4 identical bottom brackets...
4 cranksets suitable for the 4 individuals (Arm lengths TBD one the people are signed)
3 disc wheels
Chains
Cash always helps

We are building the frame and bodywork in-house... Just your basic streamliner...no need to reinvent anything here....Don Vesco already showed us all how to go FAST @ Bonneville...

Interest??

I HATE airbags...a properly designed crash structure and racing belts.....

And...well Bonneville is the biggest, whitest, most surreal place you can imagine...not much to hit out there... Wink

5'8" maybe 5'8.5"
59-61 Kg depending.

What sort of power/durations are you looking at?

We really have to locate the people first...because I have a basic design laid out...but drag is everything on this project...so the bodywork's final dimensions and therefore the total drag and thus power required for 120 MPH is somewhat fuzzy until then...

I expect that the way to operate this beast is to allow each "engine' to relax a bit in sequence in the acceleration run...(like rotating around in a paceline) up to some intermediate speed then all 4 will have to go to "FULL CHARGE" mode a predetermined distance before the timing trap as to arrive at the "Start" end of the timing trap at max speed...and maintain that output for approx 25 sec...

Then turn around and do it again in the opposite direction within 1 hour....

Then go and collect our World Land Speed Record....

Jason Queally had a go at the land speed record in 2001 and couldn't get with in 15 mph on the guy who broke it,you will need big watts, but in the recumbent position.

I think this is pretty cool - good luck with it!

Have HPV records been attempted at Salt Flats? I know Battle Mountain has been the place for records - seems Bonneville would be pretty good for this as well.

I used to mess around in HPV's back in the day. It was pretty hard to get multi-rider rigs to work in concert. Rode stoker in a back-to-back tandem once. Terrifying - would have locked up the brakes if they gave me one.

Another consideration is it's hard to get decent power output until you train a LOT in one.A lot of successful record attempts have been by dedicated riders who were not necessarily world class sprinters, but guys who put a lot of time in the machine to figure it out.

Not sure, but I think its been at least 15-20 years since the multi-rider record has exceeded the single? - correction is long overdue.

I'll for sure have to make it out to speed week if/when you pull this off...

Indeed...once the people are identified...and the final dimensions of the beastie are set...we will build the bare chassis...and start training on it...sans bodywork at first...

It might just be a good idea to fab up a set of 4 fixed training machines...one in the riding position of each position in the streamliner and distribute them to the "engines" involved...

I don't want to just break the record... I want to blast the old one into dust.....

120 MPH....on muscles alone... How cool is that!!!

Well...I am seeking the people...that is step 1...

Then the final design must be put in CAD...

Then I have to build 4 training machines to send to the 4 engines...and start fabricating the frame...and the aero bodywork...

The engines have to train...in the odd positions that they must make power...

I am hoping for Speed Weeks 2013 to go and shatter the record...

Well, I'd be more than interested. Caught up right now in the Olympic run, but after that, I'd love to be apart

This is a really cool project. I have been dreaming og building a HPV myself. The idea of going 100kph has fascinated me and I think it could be worlds of fun to make one myself.

Anyway, from my own reading on the subject I have found that it is much better to have pursuit like cyclists as it takes just about forever to accelerate the bike to those kind of speeds. At battle mountain they use 5 miles of pedaling to finish a run (and then ofcourse rolling to a stop for quite a while). Sam Wittingham, the current record holder, pedals under heavy load for about 4 minutes on his runs. See him onboard here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWaC2-LuoVI i.e. about the same as a 4k pursuit.

Another thing to note from the video and the Varna Tempest (thats the bike) is that the frontal aera is incredibly small. You can see his shoulders are pushed together for minimizing this. (I assume the OP already know this Wink ) The Varna has a CdA of about 0.16 ft^2 compared to a track sprinter seated in the drops of at best 1.6-1.8 ft^2. Thats quite a difference and the main reason sprinters can't go beyond 75kph even though they do 2500W.

Another concern. Is the bonneville soil really the best for this kind of attempt? Rolling resistance becomes rather great at 120MPH. Especially for 4 heavy sprinters on 3 disc wheels. If you could loose 40kg of bodymass going with pursuiters which propably will do a better job anyway, I might go with that.

Also, battle mountain is the chosen place beacuse of its mild gradient and altitude. It slopes very close to the 0.66% gradient that is alowed and that acompany for about 250W in the Varna Tempest. Bonneville is flat and does not give you this. Also the altitude makes the air thinner and obviously improves the aerodynamics even futher.

Sorry for the bad gramma. I'm from Denmark. Best of luck.

Well, first, you have to get rid of the notion that all sprinters are huge. I'm about 77-79kg. I think enduro based sprinters would be fine.

Also, I agree that Battle mtn might be a better place, however, speed week is a seriously huge event, and would be much easier to draw in support for (especially since he is already well connected in the autosports circle.)

I'm not saying sprinter are always huge, but often they are larger than pursuiters. They have wider shoulders and generally a wider apperence which isn't beneficial for aerodynamics since it increases the frontal area. I my oppinion you ideally want narrow short people with large FTP's.

Statistics from the 2004 Olympics showed that male sprinters were avg. 7kg more bodyweight even though they were avg. 5cm shorter height. Differences are even bigger if we look at pointrace and scratch race riders. They were equal of height but avg. 13 kg less body mass. Pursuiters are often taller so you'd have to find some shorter ones.
