I got word from Mike and Spencer from the Carolina Velodrome Association that the Rock Hill city council is voting on the proposed velodrome this Monday at 6pm during their scheduled meeting at City hall. They have negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Rock Hill. Monday night's vote will decide if the plan will go forward or not. Mike and Spencer would like folks to be there to show support. So, if you're in the area, please stop by Rock Hill City hall around 6pm on this upcoming Monday.
In an earlier post they requested folks to send emails to the Rock Hill City council members in support of the project. If you haven't gotten around to that task yet...now would probably be a good time. I'm sure any bit of last minute momentum will help.
where do we send those emails? I have family that could possibly attend the meeting but they are Greenville residents does there opinoin count. They really enjoy bike racing and my brother may be interested in racing. _________________ "Shake & Bake!"
I got this post originally from the nobrakesatl site. It contains Spencer's note, a sample letter, and the email addresses and phone numbers of the city council members at the bottom. Enjoy!
Excuse the interruption, but I have some urgent news: I am co-founder of the Carolina Velodrome Association (CVA), and we have successfully engaged the City of Rock Hill regarding a 250m, concrete velodrome project as part of Rock Hill’s sports tourism strategic plan. For almost six years, we have pursued various avenues, while meeting with City Council and members of the Rock Hill sports tourism group. Earlier this year, we were presented with an opportunity to place the velodrome in the center of a 100 acre, mixed use development (think Birkdale, but twice as big). The developer has already donated the land and presented his support to the City Council. We have raised $500,000 and have the full support from USA Cycling. All the economic impact studies have been done, everything is set.
We are asking the City of Rock Hill to pay for construction costs, and the CVA would jointly operate the velodrome with the city. This proposal has support from the City, although the Council members expressed a strong need to hear from the various constituencies that would use the velodrome. That is where I need your help.
I need you and people in your sphere of influence to email (or call or write) the Rock Hill City Council members and express your support for the velodrome. I am attaching a sample email/letter and full contact info for the City Council and Mayor. Here is the kicker: our voices need to be heard by the end of July. This means we need your support right now. Please take a moment and help us secure the only world class velodrome in the southeast and a true asset for the Carolinas cycling community.
Please forward to others that can help us make the desired impact with City Council.
Thank you,
Spencer Lueders

Re: Proposed Multi-Use Velodrome
Honorable Mayor and Distinguished City Council:
My name is ___________________________, and I am a member of [INSERT ORGANIZATION NAME] [alternative: “the local cycling community”]. I am writing to express my support for the proposed velodrome project that was recently presented by City Manager, Carey Smith, and members of the Carolina Velodrome Association.
Without a doubt, the velodrome will serve as a hub for cycling in Rock Hill and the Carolinas. The velodrome and adjoining planned paths and trails will connect the community and highlight Rock Hill’s strategic vision of health, wellness, and a leader in sports tourism. I urge you to approve this unique and desirable asset as the next sports tourism venue in Rock Hill.
Thanks for posting that article GeorgeR! And it is correct. All the digging is almost done and they will be pouring concrete soon. Rock Hill Parks & Rec is in the final stages of getting a cycling director on their staff to get an early start on programming and events.
Though we don't have firm dates yet we do expect to be able to use the velodrome as early as next February! We're also working on getting a website up to help start some more publicity.
I wonder how USAC will feel about putting Rock Hill on he elite national champsionchips after having it indoors for a while.. or putting Masters and /or Jrs, etc. on a short track that nobody is used to
pjcampbell •wrote• that sounds pretty crazy. i hope it works out.

Master Natz seemed to go well last year at Frisco, which also hosted JR. nationals this year. USAC has already, at least verbally, committed to letting us host National Championships here. And though I haven't been the one talking with them, I hope we can include the elite field as well.
Zdravo •wrote• As is Blaine! A gem! ..... Er for 4 months out of the year.
Hey now... we get a solid 6 month riding season out of our velodrome! Nevermind that, during the first month and the last month, you may need winter riding gear...
Here is an article about the recent announcement from Rock Hill. This month they are pouring the foundation and beginning work on the top plates. Thad Fischer will be the overall cycling director for all the cycling venues.
Wow, building all types of cycling activities there. Sounds great.
Too bad it sounds like you'll get run over by a monster truck getting to the park though...Guess that is Yakima and Thule's niche.
So it looks like the track surface is about 80-85% done. Knee wall around the top is about 40% done. Tunnel under the track is in place, and the trackside (officials?) building is pretty complete as well.
