England: Are We There Yet?
Kit Karzen RacingThis year at Elite Nationals, we got the chance to meet Kit Karzen. What breath of fresh air! This junior racer was full of excitement, fun and speed not to mention he seemed to be a great kid. He offered to keep us up to day with his actvities. He recently got back from the Revolution 17 in Manchester. Here is his take:

I'm now settling back in after my trip to England for the Revolution Race Series, which were held in Newport and Manchester. While on my journey, I got a great birds eye view on the operations that go on over there. I also had a few eye openers on how they are so successful on the track.

After being embraced by the Great Britain Cycling Federation for a few weeks, I got to see how the British Federation works, inside and out. One great reason for their success is the development of riders…which entail the Revolution Races. Their Juniors get to race at a huge event with not only a world class field, but at a world class atmosphere. Let’s just say it’s a little different from racing in an empty velodrome to a packed one with the liking of 3000 spectators.

No wonder why the US isn’t exactly a heavy hitter when it comes to junior worlds, because we hardly get a taste of what it’s like to be on the line with the Dutch, the French, or the Italian. Seeing that cycling is in transitional mode in almost every aspect, one of the most needed with some TLC is the promotional end. Lets just say having time-trials by the book for hours on end doesn’t exactly appeal to most spectators, which is why there should be some thought into some more “out-of-the-box” style racing.

While at the Future Revolutions, they included Derny racing for the guys and girls, and even a girls Madison! Also, there were Madison Kilos, Motor Paced Scratch Races, Team sprints with 2 juniors and an elite rider, the list goes on and on for what they have come up with, and it works! They obviously have perfected a lot of it, seeing that the Revolutions have to actually turn down spectators because they are sold out of tickets every time! It’s a shame why track racing can’t be more of a spectator sport, it just needs that one person to put the pieces together. I know T-town is a prime place with international events, but it’s about time to start expanding.

As a junior’s point of view, it would be nice to not always have to answer your class mates that you’re not aiming for the Tour de France and my automatic idol isn’t Lance. With the right type of races and proper promotion, track racing will grow…plain and simple. We’ve done it before, remember when even Encino used to get spectators stacked up against the rail for the racing. It’s about time we “upped the antie” for track cycling, just like it used to be.

If more kids took the time to speak out about bettering their sport and more of the people-in-charge listened, maybe the US'' approach to track racing in general and nurturing Junior talent in particular would take a giant step up. This junior has leader potential.

Kit makes an excellent point for expanding the current development efforts in the US.
