What bike should you ride? That's a tough question. We go round and round on that subject in the forums on a regular basis. Some content fit is paramount, others argue frame material, geometry, color and any other number of features make all the difference in the world. One frame that always seems to be a contender in the discussion is the Tiemeyer Signature Track. It's often compared to the current generation of Carbon frames (Teschner, Dolan, Planet-X) as the price is in the same ballpark. ($1850 Custom, $1350 Stock Geometry). The key thing you see in the last sentence is the word Custom.
Having ridden the Planet-X and the Teschner Track Pro, I decide it was time to talk to Dave Tiemeyer about going head to head. He quickly jumped at the challenge! This is a the first segment of my personal experience getting a custom Tiemeyer Signature Custom frameset built! This series will detail the design phase, fabrication & delivery and finally the race worthiness of the frame! Let's get started!
This process actually began at the 2006 USCF Masters National Championships. I was announcing part time, working with the organizers, but I did have some spare time. Between sessions I sat down with Dave and he walked me through the paces of his standard fit. Dave offers many levels of fit, up to and including power based fitting. Sitting outside the wall in Colorado Springs, we stuck primarily to measurements, photos and other pertinent discussion. The thing that impressed me the most was not the PositionCycle, the bells, whistles or any other thing. It was Dave's incredible knowledge of bicycle geometry.
Dave listened to my questions, took time to answer them in understandable terms and guided me through the fit. When we were all done, he presented me with the tools to telegraph my position to another bicycle and how to re-measure the bicycle in the future. Little did I know that information would be so valuable just 2 years later.
As this process kicked off, we decided to use the fit position from 2006 and compare it to where I was today. This is where the measuring information came into play. I measured my road bike and sent the details on. This is all fairly simple using the Tiemeyer Order Data Form. You fill in the information and forward this to Dave. Dave has an online calculator that will give you a good starting point for your frame design. The online calculator is probably more than adequate for most people, but when you are buying a custom frame from a master builder, there is more to it.
Once Dave receives the information, he documents the ideal riding position or
overlays multiple positions in the case of designing for an omnium
track frame. Various adjustments for the components you want to use are added into the equation and as he moves forward the "frame
geometry just crystallizes". I received my first schematic of "my new frame" in about a day. I had a few issues (I thought the bottom bracket was a bit low, this was too long, that was too short). We spent the next few hours discussing this all via email. Every email was polite, well written and very easy to understand. One would think changing the seat tube angle by 2 degrees would be alarming. It is, until you have a good explanation. Understanding that your seatpost can add almost 2 centimeters to your effective top tube length is something I had never thought of (straight vs. offset post). Again, Dave was never far away and his explanations were put in easy to understand terms. Adjustments to compensate for riding style and preferred events were not a problem. The design changed three or four times over the next few hours. This was never alarming as on each iteration, you see your key measurements (saddle height, reach & set back). I have to confess, I was amazed how many different frames could/would fit me!
When the dust settled, this arrived:

Now the waiting game begins. It's exciting, it's fun. I learned a lot about bicycle geometry. Will this pay off in the long run? I can tell you that the learning experience was definitely eye opening.
The frame is currently slated for deliver mid-late August! I am told fabrication will begin this week.

Re: Project Tiemeyer - Part 1 - The Design (Score: 1) by acoggan on 07/18/08 @ 10:23:20 AM (User Info | Send a Message) | | 1. I had a similar, very professional experience when corresponding with Dave a number of years ago. Ultimately I did not have a frame built, but I came away extremely impressed by the speed and clarity of his emails (and also by the quite-reasonable price).
2. Rumor has it that he''s starting to work with carbon fiber now - could you perhaps ask him and report back anything you learn? |

Re: Project Tiemeyer - Part 1 - The Design (Score: 1) by mac on 07/24/08 @ 06:31:09 PM (User Info | Send a Message) | | 3-4 years ago I ordered a custom bike for my son. The 3 of us communicated by e-mail between Canada, France, and USA. Within a very short period of time the order was complete. Everything worked extremely well from design to delivery. I would not hesitate to order again. The frame has been used in many Cat 1/2 races on more than a dozen tracks. Your first article reflects our experience. |
